The gut/brain axis
The Gut-Brain Connection: A Holistic Approach to Health
My passion for a holistic approach to nutrition led me to train as a counsellor, and I now support gut health, immunity, and mindset naturally.
Many of my clients eat incredibly well, keeping what looks like a perfectly balanced food diary—yet they still struggle with unexplained digestive issues. Even after medical tests and doctor’s visits, their symptoms persist.
That’s why my first questions are always: How are your stress levels? How well do you sleep? How do you switch off?
For over a decade, nutritionists have discussed the link between gut health and mental well-being, and now research is confirming it.
What Is the Gut-Brain Axis?
The gut-brain connection plays a crucial role in both mental and digestive health. Scientists have found that irritation in the gut can send signals to the central nervous system, potentially triggering mood changes. This could explain why people with conditions like IBS and other functional gut disorders are more prone to anxiety and depression.
The Role of Gut Bacteria in Mental Health: emerging studies highlight that an imbalance in gut microbiota, known as dysbiosis, is linked to the onset and progression of depression. The gut-brain axis plays a role in regulating emotions, and by improving gut bacteria, we may be able to support better brain health. Symptoms of a gut-brain imbalance can include:
✔ Digestive discomfort
✔ Abdominal pain
✔ Indigestion
Serotonin: The Key to the Gut-Brain Axis
Serotonin, often called the “feel-good” neurotransmitter, is a major player in the gut-brain connection. Interestingly, about 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut, and the gut microbiome is essential to its regulation. The development of gut bacteria in early life is closely linked to the formation of the serotonergic system, which influences mood, digestion, and overall well-being.
By addressing gut health holistically—through nutrition, stress management, and lifestyle changes—we can take meaningful steps toward improving both our mental and digestive health.
